The revered Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man and chief who united seven Native American tribes to resist U.S. government encroachment on their lands. Known for his bravery and spiritual leadership, he famously inspired the victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 before his death in 1890.
He strongly opposed white settlement and refused to sign treaties that forced his people onto reservations, advocating for the preservation of their traditional way of life.
After working as a performer with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, Sitting Bull returned to the Standing Rock Agency in South Dakota. Because of fears that Sitting Bull would use his influence to support the Ghost Dance movement, it was ordered that he be arrested. During an ensuing struggle between Sitting Bull's followers and the agency Indian police, Sitting Bull was shot in the chest and died of his wounds.
As a prominent, defiant leader, Sitting Bull remains a powerful symbol of Indigenous resilience against colonization.
