Various Sizes - Matted Prints
A member of the great Nez Perce tribe of the Plateau region of the United States, Lawyer was once considered the principle chief of the whole Nez Perce nation by the United States government. Having gained his name from his persuasive oratory skills, Lawyer was also seen as a controversial figure for signing a treaty pleasing to his own Upper Nez Perce but hurtful to those Nez Perce living outside of his region.
Influences of Euro-American culture can be seen in the use of a military coat and stroud blanket altered with the additions of leather fringe, beaded strips and lengths of horsehair wrapped with dyed quills. The beaver fur top hat, festooned with ermine pelts and a prized peacock feather, was an actual accessory of Lawyer's who was drawn wearing such a hat, with three bird plumes tied to it.
Here Lawyer is portrayed holding a staff of office that includes feathers, red wool, hawk bells, an American flag, and topped by an eagle's head - a further symbol of the powerful "medicine" and authority that backed Lawyer as the Nez Perce's head chief.
