Various Sizes - Matted Prints
Dressed in traditional Navajo clothing and flanked by depictions of Father Sky and Mother Earth, this young lady holds the ritual "wedding" basket which defines the Navajo ideals of balance, harmony, and wholeness. While the open form of the basket signifies the earth, when turned over, it becomes the dome of the sky. The triangular designs are mountains and thunderclouds. The east, a place of power and beginning, is symbolized by the break in the design, purposely created to allow the power of the east to pass within. The circular patterns of the coiled basket suggest the red evening sunset, the night sky, white dawn, a rainbow, and the seasons. Taken together the basket signifies the harmony of the ups and downs or cycles of life, spiraling around. This is hozhon.
