Buffalo Hunt

$40.00

12” x 12” Matted Print

In front of a beautifully painted buffalo robe stands the Blackfoot chief Big Moon dressed in his finery which includes native items such as his eagle feather fan and beaded blanket strip, as well as trade items such as his beaver fur top hat and red wool stroud blanket.

In the background are the typical stylized figures of Native American narrative painting. These pictographs show one of the most important activities of Plains Indians life-the buffalo hunt.

The buffalo was revered by the Indians who related him directly to the Great Creator. Understandably, then, a major part of Native American life was oriented in and around the buffalo herds. They constantly moved with the herds in every season except the winter months. The buffalo's habits and kinds were studied intensely, and in time the Indians put virtually every part of the beast to some utilitarian use. To the High Plains tribes, the buffalo was life itself and became a natural symbol for the universe.
